Japanese stocks fell sharply at the start of the week as rising oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East rattled global markets.
Japans benchmark Nikkei 225 dropped as much as 6.9% in morning trading, while the broader Topix Index declined up to 5.7%, marking the biggest market slide since volatility earlier this year linked to tariff disputes.
The selloff was largely triggered by a surge in oil prices, with crude climbing above $110 per barrel as conflict surrounding Iran intensified. Because Japan imports most of its energy, higher oil prices quickly raise concerns about corporate costs and economic growth.
Technology and financial stocks led the decline. Major companies such as SoftBank Group and Advantest saw significant share price drops as investors reassessed growth prospects amid rising uncertainty.
Analysts also noted that Japanese equities had been among the best-performing markets in early 2026, making them vulnerable to a pullback as global risk sentiment weakened.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have further unsettled investors, raising fears of prolonged instability that could disrupt energy supply and global trade. Since Japan relies heavily on oil imports from the region, developments there often have an outsized impact on Japanese markets.
Foreign investors, who had previously driven much of the rally in Japanese stocks this year, are now showing signs of pulling back. At the same time, domestic investors appear hesitant to aggressively buy the dip, suggesting volatility may continue in the near term.
Despite the sharp decline, analysts say the longer-term outlook for Japanese equities will depend largely on the direction of oil prices, the evolution of geopolitical tensions, and the resilience of the global economy.
