The demo account is quite useful. The funds provided are generous, $100,000, which is plenty for beginners to practice with. The interface is identical to the live trading interface, so the operation is practically identical, allowing for quick adaptation to live trading. However, the demo market lags a bit, a second or two behind the live market. The feel I develop in the demo can sometimes deviate slightly in the real market. Last time, I made a significant profit on a Euro trade in the demo, but then used the same strategy in the live market and ended up losing money, all because of that slight market shift.
